Spiritual Instruction and Discourses, Vol. 1: The Authentic Seal

By Archimandrite Aemilianos of Simonopetra

From the inside cover:

The Jesus Prayer is not simply a prayer. It is food from Christ, the Lamb of God, present in the remembrance and invocation of His divine, terrible and most sweet Name. It is also a draught of the heady new vintage of Grace, which is so uplifting. The whole of Christ is assimilated and then we reflect the properties of God, gods from God made Godly, radiant and mystically active.

From the Introduction:

This collection covers a long period of time, from 1968, from the first version of the Internal Rule of thee Holy Cenobium of the Annunciation, until 1994. The homilies were addressed to a variety of audiences and were delivered at different times in the Church year, while the written texts were composed for specific occasions. In both cases, however, the governing concept is the same: the beauty of the monastic state, its discovery and the experience of it. Through this way of life, personal communion with God is achieved by the souls of all the faithful who court and seek Him, and not only those of monks. This experience is manifested, described and reconstructed in a way which is direct and comprehensible, through mystical symbols and Gospel parables, historical narratives and tales of saints, interpretive references and theological formulations, all of which stimulate the souls of [Elder Aemilianos'] audience and disciples to strive in search of the Divine Face.
